• How many young people do you personally know who have significant savings accounts? I’m not saying they need to have tens of thousands of dollars or anything, but even just a few extra grand stored away? Let me tell you, I can’t think of a single person I know.

It seems like these days the world has gotten far too expensive and complicated for young adults to have a firm grasp on their financial responsibilities. My elders they tell all these tales of saving up money during and after college, and it’s a completely foreign concept to my generation. My normal bills are way too high to have excess money at the end of the month. A paycheck for me barely covers the cost of my apartment rental, groceries, and my energy bill. I’ve even gone so far as to stop using my indoor lights and temperature control to try to save on my utilities, but this eventually leads to new expenses anyways. For instance, the stitches required after I cut my finger open in the darkness and the ridiculous HVAC repair costs I had to cover after my furnace sat unused for too long. Here I was trying to free up some funds, and instead I managed to break my central heating method instead on the coldest day of the year. I realized that my heating and cooling expenses were astronomical, especially during the hot summer months here, so i’m trying to find a way to cut back on my temperature control reliance before the warm season arrives. I decided to keep my entire HVAC system powered off for as long as possible, saving myself some money in monthly energy bills, while also acclimating my body to surviving without modern heating and cooling. I can’t wait for the day when people don’t have to choose between a college degree and modern living standards

I don’t know about you, but it seems like our weeknights completely fly by in this household. All day, my boyfriend goes off to work in the city and I work all by myself from home. We like to unwind with a TV show as we eat dinner, so that requires going down into the frigidly cold living room downstairs. Have you ever gone to one of those small gourmet restaurants in a trendy downtown city? They’re always packed to the brim with about a dozen tiny tables all smashed into the bedroom-sized dining room together.

You barely have room to navigate the space, let alone to get comfortable once you’re seated without accidentally bumping elbows, knees, and toes with your neighbors every few seconds. To make matters worse, the air temperature control in those tiny restaurants is always totally out of whack. I guess that the space is just too small to maintain a consistent comfortable temperature, because it seems like the little eateries are always way too hot or too cold with wild fluctuations in between. I swear, it’s either as if you’re eating right in the kitchen, with the burning hot stove top bringing the internal temperature up to about 95 degrees, or else it feels like you’re sitting in the walk-in freezer, enjoying subzero surroundings. I don’t know why there seems to be no moderate air conditions in between, but this is just what I’ve noticed. One of the funniest things I’ve ever realized, though, is the comradery between diners at these tiny eating establishments. One day in particular it was a mere 9 degrees outside, and the indoor air temperature was hovering at only about 60 degrees. We were fighting for every one of those degrees. Every time someone walked into the restaurant and lingered in the doorway, exposing the brutal chill, the entire restaurant of patrons would shout out in unison “close the door!” in a show of true solidarity.

Within a few weeks, my life had changed completely due to this heating plus cooling specialist. That way, my pal and I would save a ton of money on utility bills each month by only using heating or cooling as necessary. The other house, but, has a brand new geothermal heat pump system installed! That means it can heat plus cool the house with no additional energy expenditure. It works by passing thermal energy back plus forth between the house plus an outdoor component, located deep under the ground. The house is so orange plus energy efficient that we’re entirely enamored with it! On the other hand, the first house has those amazing radiant radiant floors!
